The Thesis | Organizational Psychogenetics
Every organization is born with a mind of its own
Rethink Science is the home of Organizational Psychogenetics, a theoretical and diagnostic framework for understanding how an organization’s founding psychology becomes encoded, inherited, and expressed across generations of people, leadership, culture, and growth.
Organizational Psychogenetics asks what the organization inherited before it ever became conscious of itself.
The Core Thesis
You've been managing a symptom. No one named the cause.
Every organization carries a psychological imprint. At the beginning, a founder or founding group makes meaning under pressure. They decide what is safe, what is rewarded, what is avoided, what is never spoken about, and what must be protected at all costs.
Over time, those early meanings become culture. The founder’s psychology becomes the organization’s operating system.
The organization may grow, rebrand, hire new leadership, change markets, or rebuild its strategy, but the original psychological code often remains. It repeats through decisions, power structures, conflict patterns, leadership succession, narrative gaps, and the way people learn to belong.
This is the study of Organizational Psychogenetics.
What Organizational Psychogenetics Studies
OPG studies the inherited psychology of organizations
Organizational Psychogenetics examines how founding psychology becomes embedded into organizational life, how it transmits across generations of membership, and how it shapes the people inside the system. It focuses on three central claims:
⎜Encoded
An organization’s psychology is encoded at its founding. The founder’s relational patterns, defenses, ambitions, fears, and unresolved conflicts shape the early architecture of the organization.
What begins as instinct becomes structure. What begins as pressure becomes policy. What begins as survival becomes culture.
⎜Inherited
That psychology is inherited. New members do not simply join a workplace, they enter a psychological system that already knows how to reward, silence, protect, exclude, elevate, and repeat.
This inheritance moves through succession, informal norms, unspoken rules, and the stories the organization tells about itself.
⎜Diagnosable
Inherited organizational psychology can be diagnosed. When recurring dysfunction is understood as inherited structure rather than isolated behavior, leaders can work at the level of origin, not to blame the founder, but to understand what the organization was born carrying.
The Organization Has a Psychology
An organization is not only what it does. It is also who it is.
Traditional organizational science studies how organizations behave, structure themselves, scale, and change. Organizational Psychogenetics asks a deeper question: what is the organization’s own psychology, not one leader’s personality, not the culture deck, but the unconscious system that shapes how people relate, decide, protect, and survive inside it. Beneath every strategy is a pattern. Beneath every pattern is an origin, and you cannot out-strategize what you have not diagnosed.
When an organization repeats the same problem in new forms, it is rarely a strategy issue alone. It may look like:
❖ Leadership misalignment
❖ Avoidant decision-making
❖ Team recurring conflicts
❖ Resistance to growth
❖ A culture that performs
but can’t feel safe
❖ High performer burnout
❖ Confusing succession patterns
❖ Unclear ownership
❖ Founder Overdependence
❖ A team that succeeds only
through exhaustion
How the Pattern Moves and How It’s Diagnosed
Four ways founding psychology transmits through the system
The Identified Patient Dynamic
One person, team, or department is unconsciously made to carry what the organization cannot face directly. The “problem employee” may be expressing the system’s unresolved conflict.
Leadership Succession Pathology
New leaders inherit more than authority, they inherit the emotional role and symbolic burden of the leaders before them. Repeated succession failure suggests the role itself carries pathology.
Foreclosed Territory
Some conversations cannot be had, some ideas cannot be pursued. The organization learns to move around certain territory instead of through it.
Narrative Gaps
Every organization has a story about who it is. But what gets left out of the story often holds the greatest diagnostic value. Narrative gaps reveal what the organization could not integrate, grieve, admit, or metabolize.
This inheritance rarely stays abstract. Through occupational reparenting, belonging to an organization reactivates early relational patterns and gives the organization developmental power over the people inside it, it doesn’t just employ people, it shapes them, for better or worse.
At Rethink Science, this is where diagnosis begins: not with more systems or performance pressure, but by asking what was encoded here, what keeps repeating, and who is carrying it. The pattern has to be seen before it can be changed.
Diagnostics / HSS
Human System Scorecard
A clinical read on how your leadership and culture actually function. We map the defensive architecture and the inherited signatures.
HSS
A diagnostic instrument for organizational psychology
The Human Systems Scorecard maps the deeper health of an organization’s psychological operating system. It helps identify the inherited patterns that shape leadership behavior, culture, conflict, resilience, and decision-making.
The goal is not to label an organization as healthy or unhealthy. The goal is to see what the organization has been unconsciously repeating, and what becomes possible once that pattern is named.
The scorecard examines constructs such as
❖ Founding clarity
❖ Leadership maturity
❖ Emotional regulation
❖ Decision integrity
❖ Role clarity
❖ Relational safety
❖ Narrative coherence
❖ Adaptive capacity
❖ Defensive patterns
❖ Succession risk
❖ Cultural inheritance
❖ Systemic resilience
What This Changes
When the origin is understood, the intervention changes
This is where the work shifts from performance management to organizational diagnosis.
Without OPG
- How do we fix the team?
- How do we improve the culture?
- How do we get people aligned?
- How do we execute faster?
- How do we scale better?
With OPG
- What is this system repeating?
- What did this organization learn at the beginning?
- What emotional logic still governs the business?
- What is the team acting out on behalf of the organization?
- What needs to be metabolized before growth can hold?
Who This Is For
For founders, leaders, and organizations that keep meeting the same pattern
- Founder-led companies where the founder still shapes everything
- Leadership teams repeating the same conflict, new language
- Organizations that outgrew their structure, not their psychology
- Companies performing well outside, exhausted inside
- Leaders who can't build the next stage on the same old pattern
Why Rethink Science
The home for
Organizational Psychogenetics
Rethink Science was created to bring a clinical, psychological, and systems-based lens to leadership, growth, and organizational transformation. We combine psychiatric thinking, systems psychodynamics, organizational science, developmental psychology, and strategic operating system design to diagnose what traditional consulting often misses.
Because the future of an organization is not shaped only by what it builds. It is shaped by what it inherits.
Start where it matters
Find out what your organization was born carrying
Every engagement begins with a diagnostic. It is the only honest place to start.
